2012 Naval Special Warfare Winter Classic
Virginia Beach Hockey Club News
Contact Us
The Virginia Beach Hockey Club hosted the first annual Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Winter Classic.  In keeping with the VBHC Mission of introducing hockey to players of all ages and skill-levels, the event was open to all NSW family and friends in the Tidewater area.

The Club hosted two events at Iceland of Virginia Beach; one on the 19th of December and another on the 27th of December.  Teams played two 50-minute games back-to-back each day, giving everyone an opportunity to participate.  Turnout was excellent on both days, keeping the benches full and the shifts short.

The events were captured on still and live action, helmet cam video.  You can access the still pictures by clicking on the labels below the pictures to the right.  Also, click on each picture to download a high-res version.  The video is available at the VBHC Helmet Cam YouTube site.

The Norfolk Admirals hosted the Virginia Beach Hockey Club Challenge Team for a successful fund-raising and club awareness event at their game against the St. Johns IceCaps on Friday, 18 January. The club raised money raffling a signed Chris Kunitz Pittsburg Penguins jersey. Two of our sled hockey team members helped us raise awareness of our sled hockey program by answering questions about the program and demonstrating that hockey is truly for everyone. Several other VBHC members helped man the booth and answer questions about all the VBHC programs, and even recruited new players and people interested in learning how to skate.

Thank you to all of our VBHC volunteers and friends for making our first event successful, and a very special thanks to Charlie Colon, Director of Group Sales for the Norfolk Admirals and our very own John Hawley for helping us make this event possible.

On Friday, February 15th, Iceland of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Hockey Club (VBHC) hosted students from Park View Elementary in Portsmouth, VA for a morning of ice skating and learning about the game of hockey. Twenty-four students from the school’s sixth grade were chosen from over 90 participants based on their superior in-school conduct and their athletic ability, which was readily apparent on the ice.

Students were fitted with protective equipment for the session. Some adventurous ones put on a hockey helmet, elbow pads, hockey gloves, and were equipped with a hockey stick to experience the thrill of playing ice-hockey first-hand. Most students went from never having tried ice skating to mastering the basics of C-cuts and gliding without any help. One of the volunteer instructors commented that “it was great to help someone go from being afraid of being on the ice, to wanting to do it again. I saw her confidence in herself grow before my eyes”.

Gwendolyn Watkins, the school’s principal, and other school volunteers and parents came out and witnessed the fun. After the skate, Ms. Watkins said “The students really enjoyed the ice skating and learning about the sport of ice hockey.” When discussing the outing with VBHC volunteers, Mrs. Lees, the PE Teacher, and Mr. Lashbrook, the PE student teacher, both agreed this was a unique opportunity for these students. Hockey is a sport they normally would not have had the opportunity to participate in, and this experience gave them a new perspective.

After the skate, the students enjoyed a much deserved pizza party and reflected on their adventure. "This was the best field trip I’ve ever been on!” one proclaimed. Each student received a coupon to return to Iceland and skate at a public session, at no cost, and continue their adventure in learning about hockey and the fun they can have ice skating.
